THE EXHIBITION

Teruko Yokoi. Tokyo - New York - Paris - Bern  traces the story of an extremely prolific and vibrant artist whose work emerged in the shadow and in the vicinityof those who shaped the major narratives of twentieth-century art history. The Catalogue follows Yokoi's erratic itinerary between Tokyo, New York, Paris and Bern - all places that left marks on her ouevre - and features works created between 1954 and the late 1960s, the period of the artist's courageous trip to the UNited States, her exhibition zat Kunsthalle Basel (1964), and her instzllation in Switzerland. the work created by Teruko Yokoi in these years not only testifies to the artist's unrellenting creative energy, but, torn between East and West, it mirrors and complicates debates on modern postwar painting.

THE PUBLICATION

The Publication catalogued and accompanied the solo exhibition held at the Kunst Museum Bern from January 2020 and extended through October 2020.  The Kunst Museum Exhibition was a seminal achievement for Yokoi, who had spent the better part of 50-yrs painting and making prints and editions in Bern Switzerland.  The show was a living restrospective of her works, focusing on her formative years where she was oft overlooked or overshadowed by gallerists and her male counterparts.  Upon conclusion of the show, the museum acquired one of Yokoi's works on canvas, Peach Blossom Feast, which was hung in the museum across from another Mark Rothko work in the Museum collectoin, No 7 (Orange), which was only fitting as he was a mentor of hers and Yokoi a confidant of his.

The publication includes images of works on Canvas across two decades, historical studies of her works by Anke Kempkes and Kuniko Satonobu,, contextualizing her work against different styles and periods, an essay from the editor and curator, Marta Dziewanska, and a transcript of an interview with Yokoi by Anushka Roschani among otyher writings.

The book is written in both English and German and is a must own for any Yokoi collector or art historian.  The book is in print and can be purchased from the german publishing house HATJE CANTZ.
